In 1969, ARC started with two parents meeting at the Studio City Park. Together, with the help of the Los Angeles City Department of Parks and Recreation, the program grew. When ARC had 35 children, the program outgrew City facilities and finances. In 1975, in order to become a non-profit charitable organization which could rely on community support and charitable contributions, family members volunteered legal, accounting, supervising services and funds. The Harvard/Westlake School in Studio City donated the use of its exclusive and beautiful facilities for Saturday activities; and ARC was incorporated. ARC is now a United Way Agency, a County Community Development Department agency and a Regional Center vendor with records, proposals, reports and inspections to correspond.

Today, ARC serves more than 100 individuals and their families annually. We provide training for local High School, College and University students serving their community social service requirements and observations. During 1985 - 2004, ARC purchased 5 adjacent properties in the North Hollywood community: The ARC Center, Apartment, Wilkinson House, Dolly House and Corner House. These properties accommodate ARC offices and provide a home-like atmosphere for ARC activities.

Rain or shine, week in and week out since its inception, ARC has been there helping the developmentally disabled from the San Fernando Valley, Los Angeles and surrounding communities make the most of their abilities. In addition, it has been providing much-needed respite for their families and guardians, all at no charge.

ARC’s English Hand-Bell Choir has performed at many functions and for many groups. The purpose of the Bell Choir is not only to provide artistic expression for the bell ringers, but also to let the world know that people with developmental disabilities have many ABILITIES; and that they are ready, willing and able to be part of the community. It is also their way of saying. "Thank you for helping us and for recognizing our talents and contributions."
