A.R.C. is a charitable, non-profit,  tax deductible,  California corporation,  incorporated for the purpose of promoting the welfare, protection,
education and advancement of  individuals with developmental disabilities.  It is designed to assess the ability and potential of each person, then develop and implement a regimen of activities  calculated to help achieve his/her full potential for mental, emotional,  physical and spiritual development.

History

Mary and Dixie

In 1969 ARC began with two parents meeting at a Studio City Park.  With support from the community and the involvement of families and
volunteers ARC has flourished. Dixie Henrikson and Mary Schallert,
founders of ARC,  reached out to United Way,  the County of Los Angeles and the City of Los Angeles for support. 

In 1975, ARC family members volunteered legal and accounting services and funds in order to successfully incorporate the program as an official non-profit organization.

ARC continued to evolve and support individuals in need.  Between 1985 and 2004 with the purchase of  five adjacent properties in the North
Hollywood community, ARC grew.  The ARC Activity Center and offices provide a home like atmosphere for  the weekday program.  In addition, there are three residential housing properties for our Adaptive Living
Program tenants.  

Today ARC proudly serves over 100 individuals and their families in the Los Angeles area. ARC is funded as a Regional Center vendor, a L.A. County Community Services Block Grant/DPSS recipient, and through
private donations and grants. 

For forty years, ARC has been committed to the idea that all people should be active members of the community with lives rich in interests and full of happiness.

Volunteers

 

 Today, ARC is working to stay strong & thrive… despite government cuts and changes, we
passionately forge on to protect & provide ARC’s high quality customized enrichment ACTIVITIES which you have come to love and continue to deserve & need.  With new families, we are paving the way for more years of excellence!
     I so very much appreciate our reliable support and enthusiastic volunteerism from the ARC Board of Directors and the Active Members.  The Board guides us through these difficult growth years, and the challenging economic climate, and additionally often help me with a variety of otherwise costly jobs like installing a stove or a new back door, planning Fundraisers, coaching Bocce Ball, helping with landscape & design, fixing the air conditioning, and driving to a dance or choir performance.
